Swimming is an Art

Swimming is an art. Basically, it’s self-propulsion in water with the coordinated movement of hands and legs. Nobody can learn to swim all of a sudden as it requires a lot of practice. The swimmers become tired in a small time span as swimming is an exercise for Whole-body. But some swimmers can swim for hours long.

Swimming is one of the remarkable Olympic sports which includes four swimming styles in competitive swimming: Butterfly, Breaststroke, Backstroke, and Freestyle. There are distinctive rules and regulations for each stroke and swimwear allowed for competition. Not only for competition but it’s also good for health and everyone must learn to swim. Swimming furnishes one’s health benefits for a lifetime. It enhances lung capacity and makes the heart rate better. Inveterate swimming builds endurance, muscles, and cardiovascular wellness.

Competition Pool Size:-

LONG COURSE:-

The swimming pool for an internationally recognized swimming competition measures 50 meters equivalent to 160 ft. (long course) long and 25 meters equivalent to 82 ft. wide. There are 10 lanes numbered from 0 to 9. Each lane is 2.5 meters (8.2 ft.) wide. The depth of the pool is 2 meters equivalent to 6 ft. 7 in. with a water temperature range between 25 – 28°C (77 – 82 °F). At each end, there are touchpads and sensors to record time and maintain the legality of relay takeovers.

SHORT COURSE:-

Short-course swimming pools might have eight or even sin lanes rather than 10 lanes and that’s why these are called short courses. The length of short course swimming pools is 25 meters which is equivalent to 82 ft. Under the FINA rules and regulations for swimming pool sizes, short-course pools might require to meet some but not all of these requirements that are recommended for long-course pools.

Swimwear:-

  • Swimsuit:- Swimsuits are made of special low-resistance fabric which reduces drag or resistance while swimming. These suits are generally made from spandex. Competitive swimmers also wear special swimsuits which include partial bodysuits, and racerback manner to boost their speed and be more aerodynamic so that they can glide faster through the water thus having a speed advantage. Under the FINA rules and regulations, polyurethane swimsuits are banned because they make swimmers more buoyant.
  • Swim cap:- A swim cap covers the swimmer’s hair to reduce drag. Caps are made of latex, silicone, or spandex.
  • Swimming Goggles:- Goggles protect swimmers’ eyes from water and chlorine.

Other accessories are used for training but are illegal to be used in tournaments or competitions which include:-

  • Drag Suits
  • Hand Paddles
  • Kickboard
  • Pull buoy
  • Ankle bands
  • Snorkel
  • Tempo trainers
  • Zoomers
  • Pool noodles
  • Inflatable armbands

Women wear one-piece suits with thicker and higher backs which should not cover the neck.

Officials who manage competition and keep the check include:-

  • Referee:- referee has the highest control over all the other authorities and its duty is to enforce the rules and regulations over the span of the competition.
  • Starter:- Starter usually starts the competition by making loud noise which is usually a horn or beep
  • Clerk of Course:- the clerk, of course, assembles the swimmers and is responsible for organizing them thorough out the competition.
  • Timekeepers:- One Timekeeper is assigned to each lane to keep a record of the time. But when fully automatic timers, sensors, and video placing equipment are used then there is no requirement for timekeepers.
  • Inspectors, Judges of Stroke:- Inspectors ensure that the swimmer complies with the rules and regulations for the start, turning, and ending. There is one inspector for each lane. Judges of stroke are there on each side of the pool and observe and ensure the rules related to the style of swimming.

Other swimming-related sports are water polo, diving, and open-water swimming which are there in the Olympics. Sounds fascinating? We at Sports Management Centre are providing young hustlers with sports infrastructure that is in accordance with International Standards. Our expenditures are for the purpose of providing them with a place where they can learn and enjoy playing sports. Our efforts are fruitful thus far and we hope to continue building our community for the same.
