Cricket is a popular outdoor sport with an estimated 1 billion fans worldwide. It is played between two teams with eleven players each. It is a bat and ball game played on a circular or an oval ground with a pitch at the centre.

Each team has to bat and bowl. The team that bats first tries to score as many runs as they can while the other team tries to stop them with their bowling by taking wickets. After the first team finishes batting the other team tries to chase the score. The team which scores the most runs or the team which chases down the target score wins.

Before the match starts, a coin is tossed. The team who wins the toss can choose whether they want to bat or bowl first. There are various formats of cricket, some having 20 overs and some having 50 overs. Each over contains 6 balls. A batsman a score a maximum of 6 runs on a single ball. There are 2 umpires on the field who make sure that players follow the rules of the game.

Equipment required for playing cricket:-

Ball:- A red or white cork ball covered with leather. It should have a circumference of 9.1 inches or 23 cm.
Bat:- A wooden bat with a long handle and a smooth face on one side. The bat should not be more than 38 inches or 96.5 cm long and 4.25 inches or 10.8 cm wide.
Stumps:- 3 wooden poles each 28 inches or 71.1 cm long and about 1.25 inches in diameter.
Bails:- 2 wooden pieces placed on stumps.

Stumps and bails are together known as wicket. 2 wickets are required which means 6 stumps and 4 bails are required in total.

Boundary:- A rope marking the perimeter of the field.
Other Equipment:- Helmet for protection of head. Gloves for better grip of bat and ball and protection of hands. Leg pads for protection of shins, knees and lower thigh.

Ground Measurements:-

Pitch:-

A pitch is 20.12 m long and 3.05 m wide. A minimum 1.22 m long area is left behind the stumps to accommodate the return crease.

The bowling crease is a 2.64 m long line which goes through the centre of 3 stumps.

The popping crease is marked in front of and parallel to the bowling crease. It is 1.22 m from the bowling crease and as extended at least 1.83 m on the either side of middle stump.

The return crease is at right angle to popping crease at a distance of 1.32 m on both sides of middle stump. It is 2.44 m long and is behind the popping crease.

Ground:-

Cricket grounds are generally oval with diameter varying between 137 m and 150 m. Distances are measured from the centre of the pitch. Shorter of the two boundaries should be a minimum of 59.43 m. The straight boundary at both ends of the pitch should be a minimum of 64 m. Boundaries should not exceed 82.29 m from the centre of the pitch.

Two semi‑circles with a radius of 27.43 m are drawn on the field. The centre of these circles is the middle stump at either end of the pitch. The circles are marked by continuous painted white lines or dots at 4.57 m intervals. Two inner circles with a radius of 13.72 m are also drawn on the field. The centre of these circles is the centre point of the popping crease at either end of the pitch. These areas are also marked with dots.
